Management Liability Insurance Specialist (MLIS)


MLIS.pngThe Management Liability Insurance Specialist (MLIS) program is a continuing education curriculum that provides an in-depth understanding of management liability exposures and insurance coverage. When you complete the program you will be entitled to display the MLIS certification to certify your expertise in the fundamentals of professional liability insurance and the more specific nuances of directors and officers (D&O) liability, employment practices liability (EPL), and fiduciary liability exposures and insurance.

Should I get my designation?
This program is recommended for intermediate or advanced agency staff including agents, brokers, agency principals, producers, account managers, and customer service representatives. 

Designation Requirements

To earn the CPIA designation, candidates are required to participate in a series of three, one-dayInsurance Success Seminars - Position for Success, Implement Success & Sustain Success.

Class Requirements
Cyber and Privacy Liability Exposures and How to Insure Them
This course provides an overview of situations of loss when a business engages in cyber and electronic activities.  Companies that use email, operate a website, collect customer data, participate in media activities, or engage the services of a cloud provide are exposed to significant liability claims.  This program will also take a look at the kinds of policy forms that have been designed to cover these exposures.  Additionally, some time will be spent on exploring the most common exclusions found within cyber and privacy policy forms.

EPL: Understanding the Exposures and Insurance Coverage
This course is designed to give a moderately experienced insurance person a detailed look at (1) the liability exposures that give rise to employment-related claims and (2) the insurance policies that have been developed to cover these exposures.  The first part of this course describes the most important common law exposures to employment litigation and the second part takes a look at specific coverage terms with EPLI forms.  Next, third-party liability coverage, claims management, defense cost and "special conditions' are also described.  Lastly, the exclusions and coverage triggers contained with the policies are analyzed.

Fiduciary Liability: What You Need to Know About Exposures and Insurance
This program focuses on fulfilling the implied promises contained in the insuring agreement. Students will review methods of providing evidence of insurance coverage; will discuss policies and procedures for controlling errors and omissions including policy review and delivery, endorsements, claims-processing, and handling of client complaints. This course includes a review of Professional Expectations; the Law of Agency; and Legal and Ethical Standards. Throughout each section of the workshop material, tips for preventing Errors & Omissions are highlighted and discussed.

How to Insure D&O Liabilities
During this session, participants will be provided with specific tools for analyzing consumer needs; will learn to utilize risk identification techniques to gather pertinent prospect information; will develop skills necessary to assimilate information gathered into a customized protection program; and will participate in exercises designed to promote effective delivery of proven solutions. Throughout each section of the workshop material, tips for preventing Errors & Omissions are highlighted and discussed.

Maintaining the MLIS Designation


After completion of the three Insurance Success Seminars, you must attend an update every 2 years.  This update requirement can be satisfied through participation in any one of the three core Insurance Success seminars, participation in any one of the Advanced Insurance Success Seminars, or by maintaining individual or group membership in AIMS.
